HENRY AND ELEANOR
WOODCOCK

Most of the information regarding the relationship of Thomas Woodcock to Henry and Eleanor Woodcock was obtained from the Raney Collection at the Roanoke Library in Roanoke, Virginia.  I know of no other documentation that conclusively proves that Henry is our ancestor.

Not much is known about Henry Woodcock's origins.  The earliest record I have is dated November 26, 1783 from Bedford Parish VA. It's a land purchase that refers to “Henry Woodcock of Manchester Parish in Chesterfield County”.  Henry died after July 1819 in Smith Co. Tennessee

Henry and Eleanor had eight or nine children:

  1. Thomas Woodcock

  2. Catherine Woodcock

  3. John Woodcock

  4. Robert Woodcock

  5. Sarah Woodcock

  6. Mark Woodcock

  7. William Woodcock

  8. Mary Woodcock was known as Polly.

  9. Elizabeth Woodcock was also known as Betsey.

Even less is known about Eleanor. Her name appears in records in different forms, Nell, Nelley, Elender, Ellenor, Elenor etc.

Other than the land records, I have found only one other reference to Eleanor. An Elenor Woodcock married Abraham Elmore January 28 1823 in Barren County, Kentucky. The date and location fit.

Note Turns out this Eleanor is the daughter of John Woodcock and Lucy Hawkins.
