Claudette visits Galveston

Hurricane Claudette Visited us in Galveston on Monday July 14th 2003 and left Tuesday  by late afternoon.  Galveston has been visited my many Hurricanes sometimes with disastorous results. The Hurricane of 1900 remains to this day Americas most deadly natural disastor. Since then a seawall has been constructed on the eastern half of the island proctecting much of the older part of the city itself.  The western half of Galveston still has a lot of exposure and in recent years has seen a lot of development in the form of summer beach houses and condominiums.

Claudette was a minimal hurricane. She hit landfall in a sparsley populated area in and brushed by Galveston with tropical storm force. The Surge tide was about 6.4 Ft with  50 - 90 mile windspeeds at her peak in Galveston. There are 3 sets of pictures here. 1 set of pictures was taken at 61st at a jetty fishing pier. The second set is the seawall. Waves can be seen breaking over it. The third set of photos is of the Seabrook waterfront.
