The Book of Nub

Chapter 2

voice has arisen that is Wild, crying out in lamentation. 2 "Woe! Woe," cries the shrinking Wild, "3A species has appeared to cover the face of the Earth, for this species has no natural predator except itself." 4Humankind has come, and they have opposed themselves to all things Wild. 5Men and women they have come, 6and hid the Wild born within themselves. 7They have seen the Wild within themselves, and hidden It in shame. 8They have seen the Wild around themselves, and banished It with the tools of their cleverness. 9In their fear of the Wild, they have trampled oblivious over the delicate cycles of rebirth and renewal which would feed them, and, instead, they hunger.

10The People of the Earth hunger for the Wild. 11They hunger for the Wild within themselves. 12They hunger for the Wild apart from themselves. 13They hunger for rich soil, sweet rain, clear skies and pure fire. 14The People of the Earth hunger for a sustainable, balanced, harmonious relationship to the Earth which supports them on Her pregnant belly.

15They have hurt their Mother, the Earth, and they have begun to know it. 16The Earth’s rich soil has diminished because Humankind has trod upon It. 17The rain has been soured by their machines. 18The sky is murky from their ceaseless conversion of Earth into artifact. 19The fire which would return nutrients to the soil has been limited for the sake of their artifacts.

20A prayer is arising in the hearts of the People. 21From deep in their hunger arises a prayer:

22Lady of the Wild within, Lord of the Hunt who wilds the sky in pursuit of us,

Teach us, Your Children, a new Wisdom.

23Let our hands be Your hands,

And with Your touch transform the aching Earth into rediscovered Paradise.

24Drink with us the soured rain,

And taste with us the consequences of our comforts that we might become aware.

25Teach us to live each breath,

And use our living Magic to restore the splendor which is Wild.

26Let us burn, Lord and Lady, together with You

With a Passion for reclaiming the Wild within and healing the Wild without.

27For the Chorus of all Creation sings:

"28I am the Wild Child, born of rumble, wave, storm and conflagration.

"29I am volcano, destroyer of forests and lifter of new land

"30I am flood, implacable eraser of landscapes and bringer of rich loam.

"31I am fire, consumer of homes and replenisher of soil.

"32I am lightning bolt, instant death and liberator of nitrogen.

"33I am bacteria, vile infester and necessary digester in your stomach.

"34I am fang, culler of the weak, and strengthener of the herd.

"35I am frond, leveler of cities and transformer of sunshine into food.

"36I am Self lost in Passion:

"Unbounded rage and the courageous defense of boundaries,

"Overpowering Lust and the Lusty excitement of healthy bodies,

"Panic and the adrenaline rush of overcoming danger.

"37I am the endless, consuming round of creation and destruction.

"38I am beautiful.

"39I am passionate.

"40I am Life."

41A Wild tomorrow comes, and Humankind will be made whole. 42The Wild sings. 43The People of the Earth sing. 44There will be harmony between their voices. 45The People of the Earth shall know the Wild within themselves and will acknowledge that power without shame and without fear. 46They will uphold to the Light their lusts and rages and panics and all the torrents of Passion which swirl within themselves. 47They will raise these dark Passions into the Light shed by Gods and Goddesses, 48and in that Light the People of the Earth shall see the worth and promise of their wholeness. 49The Light of Divinity is Self-knowledge and Self-acceptance. 50The Wild within shall not be annihilated in that Light, but shall, instead, be made known and made pure.

51Hear the pure Wild of a new covenant with all that is: 52The People of the Earth shall honor and serve the Wild, and the Wild shall teach them a new way of relating to their Wild Selves. 53The People of the Earth shall know their capacity both to harm and to heal: the world, themselves, each Other. 54The Wild of healing will pour through them like a roiling river, seeking the wide Ocean of the possible made manifest. 55The People of the Earth shall thrill with the power of an unleashed Wild, 56for, at last, the People of the Earth shall come to trust their Gods.

57The People of the Earth can not trust the Wild. 58The People of the Earth can not trust themselves. 59The danger of the unbridled Wild is manifest. 60In rage and thunder the Wild takes its toll. 61Nevertheless, the raw energy of the Wild is the jism of God, and that Wild, perilous energy is the seed in the Goddess making all that is.

62The People of the Earth shall adore the Goddess who is their Making, and in that adoration they shall come to trust. 63With their Gods they shall come. 64In Ecstasy, they shall come to trust their Goddesses. 65They will give up to their Goddesses in shudders of delight all the Wild energy that they could not handle, and trust the Gods to use it to heal. 66For the good of all, the Gods shall receive the over-brimming Wild of their secret Selves and use It to empower the Earth: the Wild and Its People.
