Poetry!
Introduction Welcome to my poetry archive. The most recent update has made the site a bit more legible. No more text on textured backgrounds! You will find over 300 poems in these pages describing my living adventure from high school through the present. I have a wide interest in spirituality, and so you will find many poems on Christianity, Zen Budhism, and the Faerie Tradition of Neo-Paganism as well as many poems written as an integral part of my love lives (or the lack there of). I believe that the writing of poetry is a sacred act. It is one of our strongest connections to our God-Self. Having said that though, I don't always shoot for the sacred in my writing, and the most prolific period of my writing occured when I would just go to a coffee house, listen to music and make myself write three poems which were often about what was happening just then in the coffee house. Of course, that's sacred too, IMHO. You will find that the poetry is mostly rated PG, but there is an occassional use of our strong anglo-saxon friends, the curse words. The Poems These poems were written from August, 2000 to December 2001. This collection includes a large series of poems written for Bridget (a pagan holiday celebrated around Feb. 1 of each year) in 2001. In additional, the final poems of this collection are all paganized Christmas carols written for the Solstice of 2001. This piece is my first real publication. It appeared in the Winter 1999 edition of Connections, a pagan magazine publishhed out of Colorado. There were very few editorial changes in their version. They did however eliminate two or three curse-words, and did not include my footnotes. The changes were perfectly acceptable to me, but, for the record, the version shown at this site contains both the curse-words and the footnotes. One of the few things that has always bothered me about the religions centered on cannonical texts like the Bible, the Torah or the Koran is the fact that there was some point in time when the cannon was fixed and no new Holy Books could be written after that point. If God spoke through people at one point in time, why would He stop? I believe that She never has, and, therefore, I wrote my own. I asked a couple close friends what topics I should cover, and then I let Her voice flow through me. This HTML version of The Book of Nub is displayed as one chapter per page, and there are nine chapters. You will probably need to scroll down to the bottom of the page to find the navigation arrows, and, hence, the further chapters. This book contains poetry written between November, 1992 and January, 1996 and from August, 1997 to December, 1999. Written between October, 1996 and August, 1997, this book covers the first and second semester of Francesca De Grandis' advanced training. Written between April and October of 1996, this book contains more pagan poetry written while studying with Francesca. These poems were written between January and April of 1996 while I was taking my first course in witchcraft from Francesca. Most of these most were written between June and November of 1992. This book continues the chronicle of my lonely-guyhood until about two-thirds of the way through when I met Lan. After that there are a whole bunch of love sonnets to her. These poems were written between November of 1991 and June of 1992 in the coffee houses of Orange County California. I was a lonely guy teaching math to business majors at Cal State Fullerton, and had just given myself permission to study the occult. Thus, this volume contains many poems about being a lonely guy, rebirth, magic and Goddess Spirituality which is slightly odd because I was also at the time a choir member and elder at a wonderful Presbyterian Church in Rolling Hills. This collection contains my earliest surviving poetry from my high school days at Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, Ca.in the late seventies through material written while attending U.C. Berkeley for college. There a few poems as well written during grad-school at Stanford at the end. Subject Indices Navigation I have endeavored to make the pages as uncluttered and simple as possible for quick loading and easy navigation. However, since I like having no words on each page other than my poetry, all the navigation buttons are unlabeled. Right Arrows = Next Poem Right arrows always take you to the next poem in the book. Left Arrows = Previous Poem Left arrows always take you to the previous poem. Since every poem has a page of notes linked to it, when you are on a note-page (as opposed to a poem-page) the left arrows will take you back to the poem the note is about.
The red marble will take you to notes about the poem. These notes are generally brief and help to provide the context in which the poem was written. Some of the notes are quite extensive and help to flesh out my philosophy. I encourage you to check out the notes, if you wish to learn more about my thoughts on a subject or if the poem is particularly obscure.
Every book has its own table of contents and the green marble will take you there.
The blue marble will bring you back here. Preferences All my poety is "all rites reversed: use what you will". That is, like the Principia Discordia, I do not choose to retain the copyright. However, I do have a healthy sense of self. Therefore, I prefer that you credit me if you use my poetry, and if you'd like to spread a particular piece by e-mail, I request that you attach my name, Scott Schulz, to the poem when you do so. |
