I really liked Dragon's Gate when it came out for the San Angelo: City of Heroes Universe. It helped that I'm playing a Korean martial artist in the San Angelo setting at the moment. However, there were some problems with it. 1) No maps (later made available from the Hero Games siteand 2) some egregious flaws in character design. As is usual with a San Angelo product, the concepts and ideas are good ones. I have enjoyed the product and recommend it. But I didn't like the fact that the big time sorcerors were all made with Variable Power Pools (which don't really give you any idea about what they can do), and one character who really doesn't fit in the sourcebook (Flamestar) whose mechanics were downright bad.
So . . . . Being one to put up rather than shut up, I'm making available the material I've written to go with Dragon's Gate. Of course, critical comment is welcomed--if you think I'm off my rocker, feel free to email me and say so :D
If you need maps for Chinatown, they are available on the Hero Games website. I am working on updating the maps for my own use--they may be made public at a later date if Hero Games or Gold Rush Games gives their blessing, so stay tuned!
Here I will place some characters designed for the Dragon's Gate. Note that most character writeups are in Acrobat PDF format. HTML formatting character writeups is too much of a pain. The Acrobat Reader is free, and plugs into most browsers, download it here:
Flamestar/Firebreak: One of the worst character write ups, mechanically speaking, I have ever seen. I got a little obsessed with the character though, for some reason, and could not resist fixing him. It probably had something to do with my GM telling me "If you don't like him, Amy, redesign him!" Anyway, the background concept was pretty good actually, although this character would have been better placed in a sourcebook for San Angelo's Finest. I'm not going to reprint his background--if you want to know what he's about, buy the book! But everything he can do comes from the author's description of how his powers actually work. I've renamed him Firebreak. Comments are welcomed.
