It's very hard to mention the words "city council" in a sentence without also mentioning the words "good old boy network" along with them. Is this a fair criticism, however? Perhaps the current government of Hollister is less of a good old boy network than it was in years past (but how would I know, I've only lived here since 1999). Whatever the case, there have been some pretty dubious decisions made by our elected leaders. They may come from a lack of experience or perhaps they could come from alterior motives. That's up to the voters to decide, ultimately.
I have had the pleasure to meet two of the more criticized members of our city council, and I must say that I do feel that they honestly are trying to do a good job in their roles, but seem a bit stymied at times. Is this where a bit more experience could come into play? Perhaps, but keep in mind that these two people put their necks on the line and ran for their respective seats while the rest of us sat back and watched. If any of us think we can do a better job, then perhaps we should put our necks on the line and run ourselves next time.
But until then, as good citizens, we should make our feelings and desires known to our elected leaders, and demand that they follow our wishes. They are citizens, too, and live in the same community as we do. Every decision they make, the good and bad, affects them as much as it affects us.
