16. Amos Baker3 TRUDE, (William D.2, John1), born 1814, St. Lawrence County, New York; died about 1890, De Kalb County, Illinois. Married 1844 in or near Clarke Township, Ontario, Canada to Phoebe McCRAY, born in Scotland in 1823. About 1840 Amos' family moved to Niagara County, New York and soon after that, Amos crossed into Canada to find work. During his time in Canada, he met and married Phoebe and their first two children were born. The third was born in Lockport, Niagara County New York in 1848 and they were reported living in Hartland Township, near Amos' father, in the 1850 census. About 1854, they moved to the midwest and settled in DeKalb County, Illinois. The 1860 census shows Amos as a farm laborer in Mayfield Twp and an 1876 directory lists him as a dairyman in the city of De Kalb. Phoebe's death certificate states that she died from nervous exhaustion.

Note: Clarke Township is now a part of The Municipality of Clarington in the Durham region of southern Ontario.  Amos may have gone there because his mother's family moved there.  His grandfather, William Eldered, died in Clarke in 1837.  I am descended from John Alexander Trude.  Click on his name above to see his biography.  Betty Trude married Issac Lyons--click on her name to see a photo of their family.
