Biography of John Alexander Trude

68.  John Alexander4 TRUDE, (Amos Baker3, William D.2, John1),  born 29 Sep 1845 in Clark County, Canada; died 12 Oct 1915 in Alcaster, Union County, South Dakota.  He married (1) 11 Dec 1863, Mayfield, De Kalb County, Illinois Mary Jane AURNER, born 19 Apr 1846 in Kingston, Illinois, died 09 Feb 1914 in Alcester, Union County, South Dakota; she was the daughter of Jacob AURNER; and married (2) 28 Oct 1914, Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa Delphene JUBER-ELLSWORTH, born 26 Sep 1855, Clinton, Iowa, died 28 Oct 1936 in Alcester, South Dakota.  The 1850 census shows John as age 5, living with his parents in Hartland Township, Niagara County New York.  About 1854 the family moved westward.  In 1860 he was living with the family of James Byris, South Grove Township, De Kalb County, Illinois.  John voluntarily enlisted in the Union Army on 15 November 1863 in Mayfield Township, De Kalb County Illinois.  He married Mary Jane right after receiving $60 of his $300 enlistment bonus.  He served with Company C, 17th Regiment, Illinois Cavalry as Veterinary Surgeon during the war.  Part of his time was spent on detached duty in Butler, Missouri.  While there, he went home on sick leave (March 1-18 1865), probably for a twisted right ankle.  Although he made it to the rank of Sergeant in little over a year, he ended the war as a Private and mustered out with his Company, 23 Nov 1865 at Fort Leavenworth Kansas.  He served under Brigadier General Thomas Ewing Jr.  An 1876 directory shows him as a farmer near Kirkland in De Kalb County.  He moved the family to Western Iowa, Sioux County, in Aug 1885 and then Alcester, Union County, South Dakota in March of 1890 where, it is said, he was a United States Marshal for a time.  He was a charter member of the Masonic lodge, the Grand Army of the Republic (Civil War vets), and the Yeomen Homestead in Alcester.  He was issued an army pension in the amount of $17.00 per month in 1913.  John had a light complexion, brown hair, blue eyes and was five feet nine inches tall at age eighteen when he enlisted.  He died of Jaundice a few days after his 70th birthday.  His death certificate lists his occupation as retired farmer.

Mary Jane's parents were both born in Pennsylvania. She was an invalid for a number of years and died at age 67 of diabetes and myelitis.  Her brother Jocob Aurner jr. and sister-in-law Mary also lived in Alcester.
Delphene's parents were both born in Canada.  She was the widow of Charles H. Ellsworth and possibly had a son named Floyd Ellsworth.  She died from a stroke at age 81.
