CHAT TRANSCRIPT

Hello all, I was at the Yahoo! chat with Run DMC on 6-13-99, and here is a transcript of what went on. Lots of news tidbits revealed by DMC. If you were there and didn't get one of your questions answered, these online things are wild for the people who put them on. I was spoiled, I had 4 of my questions answered (I got there about 20 minutes early and started inputing my questions then, that must have helped.)

Host: We're chatting with Daryl of Run DMC and he's here to tell us why they're involved in this year's Tibetan Freedom Concert. Which is being held simultaneously on four continents this year. For more info, go to: www.tibet99.com

DMC: What's going on? This is DMC in the place to be. Nobody in the world can rap like me. And by the end of today we'll see that Tibet is free.

Tibet_m: What events led you to participate at the Tibetan Freedom Concert? Will you consider to do more benefits for Tibet, if the opportunity arises?

DMC: Run DMC have been trying to get on the show since the first one. We missed the Randall's Island show in NYC because we were in Europe. It just happened that we were off this day and so we grabbed the turntables and the microphones and brought it on. We've been trying and trying and trying and now it's materialized.

Thad_Moren: When is the release date for the new album?

DMC: I'm not sure of the actual date, but it's going to be September.

Punkyass_girlie: What's your favorite track to perform live, and why?

DMC: I think I like "King of Rock" because it is one of the unique records made by Run DMC, there's rock guitar on it. For Run DMC everybody thought our rock claim was "Walk This Way", but we had already rocked the box with "King of Rock". "Walk This Way" just took it to the next level.

Host: Run DMC are teaming up with Aerosmith once again, only this time it's for the remix of "It's Tricky" to be released on their upcoming album, "Crown Royal".

Thad_Moren: Are there plans for an official Run DMC web page on the net? Have you guys seen any of the other unofficial fan web sites on the net?

DMC: I've seen a couple of them, and they're kinda cool. I think in the last year I've seen some of them. We're working on an official one to coincide with the release of the new album.

Liquid_Candy_: How is this album different from the previous albums?

DMC: I think this record is different because it has more of a 90s hip hop sound. The album is versatile, because there's the classic DMC sound and there's present sounding rapping and beats. Plus a few songs that predict the future. A lot of guest appearences, Busta Rhymes, Lord Finesse, Method Man, that's the main difference, a lot of cameo appearances. A couple of records that sound more like what you're hearing currently.

DaZyGiRl79_99: Who were your musical insperations growing up?

DMC: Personally, musically Elton John... When I was growing up there was this radio station that played everything from R&B, Motown, but the records that always caught me were the records by classic artists, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Who, I just liked the way they made records. What made me want to be a rapper, a group called the Cold Crushed Brothers, they were a big rap group in New York, before rap records were being released.

Ace_Life: I have heard that you will be doing some more work with Aerosmith? What will that project be like?

DMC: We're trying to hook up with Aerosmith, they're going to Europe and we'll catch up with them here or there. Rick Rubin is going to produce and we're going to do a remake of a Run DMC song instead of us doing a remake of an Aerosmith song.

Thad_Moren: Any plans for a "Together Again" Tour with the Beastie Boys?

DMC: No Doubt. Whenever it can happen it's done. We don't have a plan for it, but I can see it happening. It's cool just to be on the same stage tonight.

manolis_varnassinger: What is your opinion of the hip hop in today's music?

DMC: Very, very super duper popular. Back when we started out, people always asked whether rap and hip hop was a fad. And we'd say, nah. It'll last forever. And look at it. I'm happy for what the music has done. Going into the 90s though, we need more socially conscious groups. In the 80s, there was a variety. Now everything is marketed the same way, no one is different. You'd see everyone in the old days, now hip hoppers seem to think what the number one guy is doing then you're not keeping it real. And I disagree with that.

Punkyass_girlie: What has your favorite moment been so far this year?

DMC: That's a good question... I think every night, just because we've been in music for 17 years and we're still able to go out and perform, without an album out. Every night I think back when I was 12 in Queens rapping. Also, I think a good moment was watching my 4 year old son dressed up in his hockey gear, the helmet, stick, gloves, armor, it's funny cause he can't even skate, but he was the cutest thing.

Thad_Moren: Which of the new young rappers have caught your ear lately? DMX? Ja Rule?

DMC: Somebody asked me that the other day... That's a really good question. I don't want to sound like I don't like rap today, but I have to say Chuck D of Public Enemy's new record. I like the Stones, Bob Seger..... The rapper I like, because he's got personality, stage presence, Method Man, he's just cool. And he's real, and he's friendly, he's like "Yo, what up?" Lyrically, a lot of these rappers I can't relate to. I think Chuck D is the greatest rapper to ever live. When I first heard him I felt like God was rapping.

Gandalf_1_rst: What album or artist would you say pioneered rap for you?

DMC: It had to be the Cold Crushed Brothers and before DJ Tony Tone, Grandmaster Can...let's see, two DJs and four MC's. This group's tape sold in NY like records sell today. The reason why Run DMC do the show that way we do, it's because of them.

tryme_onetime: Who produced the new record?

DMC: Run DMC self produced it.

the_glove_20_sonics: How many tracks will be on the new album?

DMC: 20 all together, 10 old, 10 new.

B_Kool_21: Will Run DMC be doing any more movies?

DMC: Yes, I don't know when, but yea, most likely.

nitro182: Where did you get the name Run DMC?

DMC: When we were first making our first record in Larry Smith's attic. At that time a name of a DJ and MC group was like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and we wanted to be something good. Russell Simmons, Run's brother, called us and said the name of your group is going to be Run DMC. it sounds so good now, but back then we thought it was the worst thing to ever come out of someone's mouth.

Heather_Hunter_KS: In the movie Tougher than Leather, you did a song with the Beastie Boys called Desperado, will it ever be released?

DMC: No, maybe we'll make that for another Run DMC album....

guerrero67: What do you think about your bootlegs?

DMC: I think it's great. I think that everybody should have a Run DMC album.

Yodi_Girl: What is your newest single? What is your next one coming out?

DMC: We're having discussions daily on that, so I do not know yet.

COOLCEE123: What does the cover of Crown Royal going to look like?

DMC: Don't know. It won't be a picture of the group.

had_some: Who is your favorite rock group?

DMC: The Beatles, The Stones, it's a tie between the two. It changes every weekend.

tryme_onetime: What has taken so long for the new album, and will this be a return to old school style which you have been the masters from the beginning?

DMC: Basically, the reason it toook so long was because we were constanly on the road. We booked all these shows and we had no time to go into the studio. For the last year we've done 15-20 shows a month, but recently we mellowed it out to 8-12 shows, so in the off time we tried to do this record.

COOLCEE123: Does Jam Master Jay rap on the new Crown Royal CD?

DMC: No, not at all. He only rapped on "Faces" and "Pause" back in '91.

YODI_GIRL: What is the best gift given to you by a fan?

DMC: A stuffed Koala bear with a gold chain around it, when I went to Australia in the 80s. it didn't even make it to my house, because I left it in the overhead bin. I called the airline, but someone in their right mind, definitely took it. That's when we were wearing the big gold ropes around our neck, so it was just so cool.

manolis_varnassinger: What was the first song you did?

DMC: The first song that Run DMC did was "It's Like That and That's the Way it is"

DMC: We always gonna be for y'all. Whereever you go and whereevery you're at. You'll have Run DMC.

Host: That wraps up our coverage of the Tibetan Freedom Concert '99.
