All the News that Fits, We Print

Letter from the Editor

Tom Weir

Our first journey to Callippe Preserve provided mixed results. The weather held back, just barely, as we appear to heve entered a series of rain days.  We encoutered a 30 minute delay in the start of play and things appeared to go downhill from there  (Par 4, 388 yards, slight dogleg left).  330 minutes later (5.5 hours) the first group posted their scores to the clubhouse.  The rest of the field finished in fits and bursts (or was that fits and outbursts) thereafter.  No awards to either the greenskeeper or pin placer today.   My fondest menory of the course may be pushing our cart for the last three holes…. Gentlemen charge your carts!

Upcoming Tournaments

Tom Weir

This year’s campaign began with the highly successful Silverado North Tournament.  But don’t forget to sign up for these rapidly approaching events.  Tom Baker has made it easier than ever to attend.  He accepts e-mails, phone calls, voice mails, completed sign up forms mailed directly to his house or even an in person chat.  Mr. Fosdick has added a new link on the Web Page, http://pages.sbcglobal.net/trfosdick/Signups.htm. for current signup status.  We will try to update this list on a weekly basis up to close date.  Email and verbal commitments are OK, but the printed signup form with check is better, http://pages.sbcglobal.net/trfosdick/1st%20Qtr%20Apps%202007.htm

Emails, verbals and forms with checks are all commitments to play and pay.

Welcome to the Big Leagues

Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach is a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design that opened for play in 1986 and is home to the Northern California Golf Association. It is the first course in the United States to be owned and operated by an amateur golf association.
Poppy Hills is a challenging, par-72 venue that weaves through the Del Monte Forest and plays host to several renowned tournaments, including the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
This beautiful, tree-lined layout measures 6,833 yards from the blue tees, 6,237 from the whites, 5,403 from the forward tees and features large, undulating greens, many of which are well-protected by water and bunkers.
Poppy Hills is consistently ranked among the best courses in Northern California and was ranked in the top 20 in the state by Golf Digest.

Sophisticated golfers will love this layout!

Rancho Cañada presents an outstanding golf club facility with two 18-hole courses that meander back and forth over the Carmel River. These mature venues were once a prized portion of a 4,366 acre California Rancho named, "Cañada de la Segunda."

In the tradition of great golf courses, both layouts are unencumbered with real estate development so that you can enjoy Rancho Cañada's gently rolling fairways and pristine greens framed by the Santa Lucia mountains and stately trees.  The 6,357 yard West Course will test your golfing skills. Fairways range from deceptively broad to needle narrow as you traverse the Carmel River three different times. On the back nine, lofty stands of cottonwood and sycamore trees await errant shots.

A World-Class 18-Hole Golf Course

Pacific Grove Golf Links offers spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, Lovers Point, Point Pinos, Crespi Pond, and Asilomar's natural sand dunes. Originally designed by Chandler Egan in 1932, the first nine holes takes you through the forested areas of Pacific Grove. Egan's nine takes you through an inland terrain and reflects much of the charm of an English rural course done in the old style.

The back nine was designed by Jack Neville, original designer of the Pebble Beach Golf Links.

The holes are unpretentious, reminiscent of an era when the 'par fours' were sometimes less than 300 yards and the 'par threes' could be contemplated by the common folk. There are not many bunkers, and the greens are small.

It was recently ranked by Zagat Survey as one of America's Best Golf Courses. The 18-hole golf course features a restaurant as well as a golf pro shop.

President’s Corner

Steve Spiva

I have to start this message off with some very sad news.  One of our long term members has passed away.  Ed Trotter who was one of more active and supportive members passed away a couple of weeks ago.  Ed was a very positive person and a great guy to be around, he will be greatly missed.  The board has voted to send donations in Ed's name to UNCF and the ASPCA, two of his favorite organizations.  We will also play the annual breakfast tournament in Ed's honor this year.  Please plan on attending in remembrance of Ed.

Not nearly as important is my follow up on the tournament on February 24th at Callippe Preserve.  On a positive note we had very little rain, some mist or light sprinkles only.  On the negative side, it was cold, cloudy, and someone forgot to put actual grass on the greens.  Other than the greens, the course was in good shape and very interesting to play, I found it to be fun but a little on the short side.  The 1,2,3
Ball aspect made it very interesting and fun.  That's means my score was bad.

I'm actually sorry that I suggested this course to our tournament director; as we teed off about a half hour late and the round took almost 6.5 hours to play.  I'm not sure the latter groups even finished.  Of course it didn't help that the carts are charged to only go 5.5 hours so we had to push the cart the last 3 holes.  We had a very good running dialog with all this spare time on our hands, the subject, "Preserve".
There was a lot of lateral hazard designated as environmentally sensitive", meaning stay out.  But my ball is right there, it's a $5 Titleist, what do you mean I can't walk in 5 feet and pick it up.  I could also get the other 100 balls in there.  What were they preserving anyway, Chicken Wire, Wood Stakes, Imported Rock, and Sticker Weeds?  No one in our foursome even saw a live animal, lizard, snake, rabbit, snail, or slug.  We finally decided it was a tax break scam so they could buy more seed for the greens.

Even though the course and amount of time was not as it could have been, it was still a great time.  Laughing and cursing during chips and putts. camaraderie at it's finest.  I hope to see you all next month in Monterey.  Get out and play more, whether it's golf, eating, walking, or just visiting friends.  Don't let your valuable time escape you.

Membership Corner

The bell club currently has 56 active members for the 2007 season.  All members are invited to participate in the 2007 State Telco Tournament.  State Telco qualifying will be the low six differentials from the ten tournaments between Poppy Hills (3/23) and Lakeridge (7/21).

Tom Baker is working on the possibility of having two joint tournaments with the East Bay Bell Golf Club to increase interest and to build some camaraderieLook for details in future newletters.

Early Praise for the NEWSLETTER

Congratulations!!!  I just read your first letter and found it to be well written, informative and the addition of pictures added a nice touch.  Keep up the good job.  What happened to Luke?
I've become involved (again) with running golf tournaments for the club that I joined here in Redmond OR.  It is not as easy as when I was doing tournaments with the BGC since less than 10% of our membership has email. The members are use to just arriving at the course on the day of play and
teeing the ball up.  Last year was a real challenge to my patience but I survived and hopefully this year will be a bit easier.
Speaking of my club, it's the Juniper Golf Club here in Redmond Oregon.  We just got voted as the #6 best new public course in America by Golf Digest. If you are ever up this way you must add it to your list of courses to play. Bring extra golf balls since the course is carved through the lava rocks and desert - miss the fairway and it's bye-bye baby.
I've signed up for the Monterey BGC tournaments so I will be looking forward to seeing you and others in March.
Pat Rogers
