Leon Calkins
I can say that I am underwhelmed by the reports from my spies on the course from the last tournament at Las Positas. I got little grist for the mill at all for this time. I can’t believe that someone didn’t do something that they would have regretted being reported here. The most egregious report was our fearless tournament director popping up two 3 woods on the 18th fairway before nailing the 3rd one a mere 260 into the wind and into the bunker next to the green. Apparently the adventure didn’t end there as he carded a 9 to finish up. At least you avoided double digits Steve…
If I don’t start getting more on course reporting back, I am going to have to start making stuff up. I think I’ll start the rumor mill up this week by suggesting that a certain member may have discovered the benefits of performance enhancing drugs as witnessed by his net 64 to take top honors this time around. Someone pass the specimen cup to DB please.
Don’t forget
Letter from the President -
Tom Weir
I last played Las Positas in March and shot an
85, establishing temporary bragging rights over our tournament director and
achieving a heady net 65 for the day. Therefore, I was approaching this
event with high hopes. Unfortunately, my pre-game visualization routine did not
include playing with the near godlike personnas of Tom Baker and Tom
Fosdick. Nor, did it include an opening tee shot just short of the senior
tees and well shy of the ladies tees (see Steve, we really do need to make some
adjustments for members who can't hit the ball as far as they used to)
Triple, Triple, Double, Water, Done. I thought the greens were in great
shape, it just took forever to get there. Through expert coaching from
Fosdick, I also learned that the lag putt, although a viable strategy on the
green, should be invoked on the first putt, not the second, and is never
recommended for the third. Hopefully, someone was having some fun out there.
Congratulations to
I'll miss the
Saturday June 20th, 2009
BGCSF Board Meeting
Attendees: Tom Weir, Tom Baker, Tom Fosdick, Tom Spiva, Tom Colella,
Tom Calkins
First order of business was to rename everyone on the board to Tom.
Just kidding, I couldn't resist.
Agenda
Monterey Trip 2010
Do we want 3 days
Proposed courses, Sat - San Juan Oaks/Laguna Seca, Sun - Del
Monte, Mon - Poppy Hills
Silver/Gold Country 2010
Need to move dates to avoid Frog Jumping
Need to find another area - i.e. Sacramento or Rocklin or Angels
Camp
Need to continue 3 days or change to only 2
Tee Locations
What is the yardage suggestions for our members
What is the cut off for 2 flights
Should flights be set by age
Should folks be given an option
The board convened to discuss all these issues or ideas in an effort to
get more golfers out to the course and to make competition more level
for all members.
Decision was to remain at 3 days for now with hopes that new
courses will generate interest.
No more
Hopefully more folks will attend and maybe bring spouses for spa
days.
Silver/Gold Country 2010
Decision is to move to 2 day event - if folks want to play a
third day then we will arrange an extra day for those who want to play
but no tournament
Suggestion is to go to Angels Camp area as it might be more fun
to stay in that area rather than
will be low at hotels
Maybe stay and play options at Saddle Creek and
Greenhorn Creek, other hotels and BB's in area
One suggestion was to go to Cache Creek Casino and play 2 days
at Yocha-De-He and stay over night
Tee Locations
This was a lively discussion with lots of options. Everyone on
the board felt it was an important subject that needed solving.
Decision 1 - the ability to split the field into 2 flights is 20
members attending, with first flight using Blue Tees and Second Flight
using White Tee's
Decision 2 - if the tees are greater than 6200 yards the
tournament director will attempt to give players options of which tee
they prefer regardless of number of players
Example: San Juan Oaks White Tee's over 6300 yards, Gold
Tee's 5700 yards, we might want to offer an option
Decision 3 - not go by age because that didn't seem to be a real
factor in length on a consistent basis Besides the older guys can
hit a 3 wood better than I
can hit a 9 iron
Decision 4 - the tournament director has the ability to decide tee
set up
and will ask for input from all members when deemed necessary
Decision 5 - for tournaments that consist of 2 flights but less
than 32 players we will no longer pay out
the field low net

Upcoming Tournaments
The remaining schedule for 2009 is below. Plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy
the game, weather, scenery, and camaraderie that makes golf the true sport of
kings. Steve Spiva has made it easier
than ever to attend. He accepts e-mails,
phone calls, voice mails, completed sign up forms mailed directly to his house
or even an in person chat. Please don’t
forget that Mr. Fosdick has added a link
on the Web Page, http://pages.sbcglobal.net/trfosdick/Signups.htm.
for current signup status. We will try to update this list on a weekly
basis up to close date. Email and verbal commitments are OK, but the
printed signup form with check is better, http://pages.sbcglobal.net/trfosdick/1st%20Qtr%20Apps%202007.htm.
Emails, verbals and forms with checks are all commitments to play and pay.
