Telecommunications
& Networking Syllabus
Course Description:
Students
will apply technical skills to address business applications of emerging technologies.
Students will incorporate a broad base of knowledge that includes the legal,
managerial, marketing, financial, ethical, and international dimensions of business
to make appropriate business decisions.
Course Goals:
Student
complies with ethical and legal standards for networking and telecommunications.
Student assessment of the development and impact of telecommunications.
Student analysis of various types and components of networks.
Student definition of communication systems.
Student access, navigation, and application of on-line services
with appropriate supervision.
Student creation, editing, and installation of web pages
with appropriate supervision.
Scholastic Integrity:
Students
are expected to be above reproach in scholastic activities. Students who violate
classroom, campus, or District rules on scholastic dishonesty are subject to
disciplinary penalties, including the possibility of removal from the course.
Students are subject to compliance with the HCISD Acceptable Use Policy (known
as “CQ Policy”). Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to: cheating,
plagiarism, or collusion.
Activities & Assignments:
The course
is organized in modules, each of which focuses on a specific goal. Students
who are absent will be given the equivalent time to make-up missed assignments
or tests. This does not include assignments given prior to the absence. Late
assignments will accumulate a minimum deduction of 5 points per day. All assignments
must be submitted within one week of the end of the nine weeks.
Evaluation:
Students
will receive regular feedback from the teacher. The final grade will be based
on the following criteria:

Classroom Behavior Expectations:
General
Guidelines:
- Be Responsible – for yourself and all equipment or textbooks issued
or assigned for your use; Food, drinks, perfumes, lotions, makeup and magnetized
objects not allowed in class.
- Be Prepared and Punctual – Bring materials to class; Arrive on time;
Bring a re-entry if absent.
- Be Courteous and Respectful – To/Of others; Listen; Avoid profanity
in all forms.
- Be Honest and Ethical – Maintain scholastic integrity, Comply with
HCISD Acceptable Use Policy.
- Do not bring outside CDs or diskettes to class unless they have received explicit
permission from the instructor. A User ID and Password and disk space on the
file server for classwork.
Lesser Infractions:
- Realigning or reassigning keys on keyboard
- Changing screen saver, wallpaper or clock settings without permission
- Keying in inappropriate language
- Intentionally interfering with another student’s ability to work
- Accessing games, the Internet, e-mail, or other programs without permission
Consequences for Lesser Infractions & Failure to Follow
General Guidelines:
- 1st Offense: Loss of computer privilege for remainder of class period, teacher
detention
- 2nd Offense: 1st Offense consequences plus Parent conference
- 3rd Offense: Discipline referral to Principal, 3 OCS Detentions, Parent conference
- 4th Offense: Discipline referral to Principal, 3 days OCS, Parent conference
- 5th Offense: Removal from class, possible loss of credit
Severe Infractions:
- Altering or deleting systems software
- Altering or deleting applications software
- Loading/Down-loading or using unauthorized software
- Vandalism or Theft (defacing/damaging computers, stealing components or accessories
or classroom equipment)
- Accessing inappropriate Web sites or other sensitive areas on the network
not directly related to the assignment
- Giving another student your User Name and Password
- Accessing another student’s account or files with or without his/her permission
- Violation of copyright laws; plagiarism
- Any activity that violates the Student Code of Conduct or CQ Policy
- Tampering with, logging on to, or remotely accessing the teacher’s computer
or files without permission
Consequences for Severe Infractions:
- 1st Offense: Referral to Principal with mandatory 4 days OCS, Parent conference
- 2nd Offense: Referral to S.A.C. (Guidance Center), possible removal from course
& loss of credit
Exemption Policy:
The instructor maintains a Mid-Term/Final Exam exemption
policy to encourage class attendance and class participation. If a student meets
all requirements, he or she must still take the exam in question, but the grade
on the exam will not lower his or her final grade. The requirements are:
Requirements:
- No more than 2 absences and a 9-week average of 90% or more, or
- No more than 1 absence and a 9-week average of 80% or more, or
- No absences and a 9-week average of 71% or more
No penalty for Extracurricular or Medical Absences
For exemption purposes only, the following will nullify exemption eligibility:
Referral to SAC/Guidance Center, Boot Camp, and/or Tardies
Test/Quiz Failures:
All failed Tests and Quizzes will be returned to the student
with a note for parent signature. The student will have one week (5 school days)
from the original test date to retake the Test or Quiz. All re-takes must occur
during tutorials or by appointment, not during class time. The highest grade
possible on a re-take is a 70. The higher of the two grades (original vs. re-take)
will be recorded in the grade book, the other dropped.
