Field Marks: In the summer the male is the only small yellow bird with black wings.  It's forehead and tail also are black.  The Female in the summer is a dull olive-yellow with blackish wings and very conspicuous wing bars.  Also has a conical beak.
Voice: Song, sustained, clear, light and canary-like. 
Where found: South Canada to n. Baja California and s. United States.  Winters in s. Canada to n. Mexico.  This particular American Goldfinch male was seen in Marion, Mass.
Texas: Winters (Oct-Jun) throughout.  Have seen only one at our thistle feeder in San Antonio.

Nest: Makes a compact cup in upright fork of bush or tree.  Lays 4-5 eggs that are pale blue.
