Field Marks: Male: The only all red bird with a crest; black patch at base of bill. Female: Yellowish brown, with a touch of red; recognizable by its crest and heavy red bill.

Voice: Song, clear, slurred whistles diminishing in pitch.

Range: South Ontario south to the Gulf States; also southwest United States to British Honduras.

Texas Resident throughout most of state (local in west Texas and Panhandle).

Habitat: Woodland edges, thickets, towns. It's nest is a loose cup in bush or thicket. They lay 3-4 eggs which are spotted.
