Marks: A small, slim sparrow,
widespread in woodlands, forest edges, and backyards, in migration and winter
also occurs in brushy areas and along roadsides. Quite tame, often nest close to
houses. Breeding adults have distinctive rust-colored cap on head, white
eyebrow, black line through eye, dark bill; back reddish-brown with dark
streaks; two white wing bars; cheeks, collar, rump and underparts plain gray.
Voice: Song dry chipping rattle or
trill on one pitch.
Where found: Canada to Nicaragua.
Migrates from n. part
Texas: Migrant (Oct-Dec, Mar-May)
throughout; winters except in n. Texas and Panhandle. Breeds in mountains. of w.
Texas and Edwards Plateau east to Austin; locally in e. Texas.
Habitat: Open Woodlands, farmland,
orchards, towns.
Nest: A small hair-lined cup in bush
or tree. Eggs 3-5 blue, speckled.
