Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) 6.5 - 7"

Field Marks:

                       A small, widespread, and abundant woodpecker with a very short bill, found in most wooded habitats and in suburban arras. This particular downy woodpecker was photographed in New Braunfels, Texas in November 1998.


Voice:

Its voice is high pitched and sounds like ki-ki-ki-ki.


Where found:

From Southeast Alaska east to Newfoundland and south to California and Florida. The birds up north move south as winter comes on.


Texas:

Resident in east, north, and central Texas; west to Panhandle, Coleman, Austin; south to upper coast (Sugar Land, Victoria, ). Occasional in winter in West Texas (El Paso).

 

Habitat:

Woodlands, farm groves, towns.

 

Nest:

 In hole in tree. Lays between 4-7 white eggs.
