Field Marks: A sparrow-sized finch.  It is widespread and abundant in a variety of habitats, especially urban and suburban areas.  It has been expanding its range easterly where it was introduced. Often visits feeders  and its diet consists primarily of seeds.

Voice: Voice is  like kweat or weet.

Where found: Resident from s. British Columbia east to w. Nebraska and south to Mexico and w. Texas.  Introduced in New York, has spread to se. Canada, w. Michigan, and south to central Georgia.

Texas: Resident through w. half; east to Coleman, Austin, San Antonio, Beeville. Straggler to Ft Worth, cent. Coast.

Habitat: Towns, ranches, canyons, deserts.

Nest: Compact; in bush, tree, cactus, building, etc.
