Yellow-Crowned Night Heron (Nyctanassa violacea) 22-28"

Field Marks: A stocky gray heron with a black and white head. Yellow on crown seldom noticeable.
Voice: Quack, higher-pitched than Black-crown.
Where found: Ne. U.S. south to Peru, Brazil. Partial migrant.
Texas: Summer visitor (Mar. - Oct) in e. two-thirds of Texas (west to Edwards Plateau, s. Staked Plains, and Panhandle), breeding locally. This particular bird was seen and photographed in New Braunfels, Texas along the Comal Creek. Winters locally along coast, casually inland.

Habitat: Swamps, marshes, shores, bayous.

Nest: A platform of sticks, in bush or tree in swamp or grove; alone or in small group. Eggs are bluish green. They lay between 3-6.
