The emotional folk music of the Portuguese, fado's existence dates back as far as 1829. It is emotionally, because the theme of fado usually involves a story about love. There are other versions of fado, like "popular fado," which blends fado and folk traditions. This style is normally more upbeat, and involves ad-libbing. Sometimes for humor people will ad-lib stories to a tune or make fun of each other. This is quite a site and very hilarious. There are two versions of the traditional fado. One from the Alfama and Mouraria districts of Lisbon, and the other from Coimbra. Coimbra fado normally talks about the cities past and traditions, whereas the Lisbon fado is more romantic and full of emotion.
